Chapter 15

Slater

It was hard for me to concentrate at work this morning, wondering how Sabela was doing with Eve. I wish she hadn’t been so stubborn, and let me go with her. But I learned early in our relationship, when Sabela’s mind was made up, you just accepted it and went with it.

She finally called when Travis and I were eating lunch at a nearby Subway. Travis threw me a grin before I answered the phone. “I hope it’s good news,” he said between bites of his ham sandwich.

“Yeah, me too,” I replied before picking up my phone. “Hey, babe. How did it go?”

I held my breath, waiting for her answer.

“Baby, we are on easy street!” Her voice was ecstatic. I could feel the huge smile as she spoke.

I let my tensed nerves relax for the first time since I said goodbye to her this morning. “You’re fucking kidding?”

“Nope, I’m not kidding. I’m looking at a $50,000 check right now,” she said before breaking into a loud, joyful laugh. “Can you fucking believe it?”

I was stunned and I scrambled with my words, but nothing was coming out.

“Baby, are you there?” Sabela asked, puzzled by my silence.

I shook my head in disbelief. “Yeah, yeah, I’m here. Fuck. Fifty thousand fucking dollars.” I looked over at Travis, who nodded and raised his hand for a high five, which I immediately gave with a super-sized grin.

“So, how was she? Did she give you a hard time?” I was dying to know.

Sabela composed herself after her outburst of giggles. “Well, she asked if we could be friends, and I told her there wasn’t a chance.”

“You’re kidding, after the crap she pulled. What did she say when you told her no?”

“What could she say? I let her know exactly how I felt and for whatever reasons, she insists on hiring us. But I’ve got to tell you.”

“What?” I asked, expecting some bad news.

“She looked awful. She had no makeup on, and was wearing some old sweats and no shoes. It’s none of my business how she dresses, but it was such a drastic change from the other times I’ve seen her.”

I chuckled at Sabela’s observations. I guess women pay more attention when it comes to one’s wardrobe. Me, on the other hand, I didn’t think it was such a big deal. “Well, maybe that’s how she dresses when she lounges around the house all day. I wouldn’t think too much about it.”

Sabela defended herself. “Oh, but you didn’t see her. Trust me. I’m not exaggerating when I said she looks awful.” She paused for a moment and quickly changed her tone. “Anyway, enough of Eve. I want to go to the bank and deposit this check. Do you need me over there?”

“No, Travis and I have everything under control. We should be able to wrap it up by the end of the day. Do what you have to do, and I’ll see you tonight at home.”

“Oh, fantastic. After I’ve gone to the bank, I can spend the rest of the day figuring out what to order for Eve’s job.
